| There is no question that the AWN
sniper rifle is by far the best sniper rifle in CS. Using the AWN's ability to pick off
the enemy at long range, it's not unlikely for a skilled sniper to wipe
out an entire team, one member at a time. However, truly skilled
sniper are few in CS mainly for the reason that the AWN is a difficult
weapon to master.
The first thing one notices about this gun is its rate of fire which is by far the slowest in the game. Since the AWN is bolt action the user must remove his eye from the scope, chamber a round and then, bringing the gun back into position, re-aim. This may not sound so bad, but try doing it with five of the enemy storming your position trying desperately to get in close enough to take you down with their machine guns before you can reload. Once most people experience this they switch to a machine gun. A big part of staying alive as a sniper is knowing how to use cover. Remember, a sniper rifle is not a machine gun. You can't go charging into a battle with it. What you have to do is use the terrain to your advantage. Take a look at the following example. Click the pics if you wish for a larger view. |
| Instead of running blindly around the above corner, you
should approach it slowly.
|
Slowly walk up to the crate until you are in the position
shown in the above pic. It is at this point that you are the most
vulnerable. Be ready for an enemy to round this corner at any
second.
|
Still well behind the crate, crouch and look through your scope. Very slowly side step out from the protection of the crate. By doing this there is less area you have to cover and your crosshairs don't have as far to travel. | As you slowly side step out further, more of the area will
become visible. Be sure to carefully scan each area as it comes into
view.

When you sight an enemy, zoom in if necessary, place your
crosshairs, and fire!
